MODULE 2

CHATPER 1- REVELATION

LESSON 1.

1. The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

2. Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

3. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

John wrote this book when he was in his nineties. He was on the Greek island of Patmos, a roman penal colony. banished by the Emperor Domitian. His crime was the preaching of the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. (Revelation 1:9).

There are elderly people that came to Christ late in life Paul’s experience shows that one is never too old God can use a person for his purposes at any age. If you feel the call of God regardless of age heed is call and he will open the door.

4. Verse 1, This is the Revelation of Jesus Christ given to him by God not the Revelation of John. “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

The purpose of the book is to show unto his servants things which must come shortly. “ Shortly is the ancient Greek phrase en tachei, which means “‘quickly or suddenly coming to pass,’ indicating rapidity of execution after the beginning takes place. The idea is not that the event may occur soon, but that when it does, it will be sudden.” (Walvoord) https://enduringword.com/bible-commevntary/revelation-1/).

He sent the Revelation by his angel to his servant John. Throughout the book of Revelation God employs Angels to assist in delivering the symbolic images and message.

“ It is true that the signs used in Revelation have been a source of confusion or controversy for some readers. Yet the signs are necessary because John expresses things of heaven, which Paul said he heard with inexpressible words (2 Corinthians 12:4). John described things he saw, so he could only use symbolic images to explain it. To us, this book is prophecy, but John simply recorded history unfolding before him, as he saw it. “John had visions from heaven; but he described them in his own language and manner. (Clarke)” (https://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/revelation-1/)

Verse 2, In this book John “Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

Due to limited language, John had a challenge to write down what he was witnessing. John was writing about future events in first century language. In describing what he saw he used the terms its looked like, its sound like using words of the first century to describe twenty first century events. Brother Gary Hamrick of Cornerstone Chapel explained that John is an Easterner and he thinks like an easterner poly chronic not like westerners who think chronological and sequential.(Mid-Week Bible Studies, Brother Gary Hamrick, Corner Stone Chapel, Revelations Chapter 1/).

Polychronic means a culture does many things at once. Their concept of time is free-flowing, and changes depending on each situation. Distractions and interruptions are a natural part of life, and have to be taken in stride. (https://www.unitedlanguagegroup.com › blog › polychro..).The book of Revelation is difficult to understand due to the symbols and the lack of logical order.

“John had visions from heaven; but he described them in his own language and manner.” (Clarke) (https://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/revelation-1/0).

understanding of why Revelations is so difficult we can move forward with our verse by verse examiniation.

3. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

By reading this book, by hearing the words and keep those things therein they will receive a blessing from the Lord. This is the first of seven beatitudes of Revelation (Revelation 1:3, 14:13, 16:15, 19:9, 20:6, 22:7, and 22:14). (nduringword.com/bible-commentary/revelation-1/)

The book of Revelation is more than prophecy it is Holy Scripture and it tells us we are to heed the messages contained therein. The last part of verse 3, is a reminder and a warning that the time is at hand.

The main take away from this verse is that Crist is coming soon he will come as a thief. Now is the time to prepare for the future do not be caught un aware turn to God now. Blessed are those who keep the messages therein.

CHATPER 1 REVELATION

LESSON 2.

4. John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

5, And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

6. And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

7. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

The book is addressed to the seven churches in Asia Minor, this was the Roman Province in Asia, which is now part of modern day Turkey. These were literal churches with congregations. The message is to the actual churches and it’s a message to future churches. Each church represents a specific time period of the church in church history up to the second coming.

4. John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

John tells the churches Grace and Peace be unto you from the Father who was, and who is to come and from the seven spirits.

There are different points of view on the seven spirits that. One viewpoint is that the seven spirts represents the fullness and completeness of the Holy Spirit. The number seven in numerology represents perfection.

There are many biblical scholars that are convinced that the seven spirits comes from the Old Testament Isaiah 11:2 which describes the characteristic of the Holy Spirit: The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord. (enduringword.com/bible-commentary/revelation-1/)

The viewpoint that Blue Sea Ministries hold is that the seven spirits referred to by John are seven angles that is before the throne of God. This is based on Chapter 8:2, And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets. In our viewpoint this scripture clarifies whom John is referring to when he speaks of the seven spirits before the throne. It is the seven angels given in verse eight.

5, And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Greeting from the Lord Jesus whom is the first begotten from the dead. Others have been raised from the dead but they all died again. Only the Lord rose from the dead and was given a glorified body and he is alive today and never again to taste death. Jesus is the Prince of the kings of the earth and he loved us so much that he shed his blood so as we may be saved. Our sins was cleansed by his precious blood, Praise his Holy Name.

6. And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

We are royalty in the kingdom of God. We are priest in the kingdom. This does not mean that we can go around forgiving sins but it means that we make man known to God and God known to man. When we witness for Christ we make God known to man and when we pray and intercede for man before God,we make man known to God.

7. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

The phrase coming with clouds refers to the fact that when Jesus comes back he will bring with him the saints whose sprits have been warehoused in Heaven waiting on that day when the Lord shall return. The dead in Christ whose spirit is with the Lord their bodies will rise from the grave and they will be given a glorified body. The spirit and body will unite and the saints with their new glorified body will be with the Lord forever and ever. The saint that are alive at the time will be given a glorified body and join Christ in the sky.

These that are raptured will not taste death. This event ends the Church Age and ushered in the Period of Tribulation.

We do not know if Tribulation begins immediately after the rapture or later. Only God the father knows this.

Jesus will not set foot on earth at this time. He will be with the clouds and in the clouds. This event was foretold by the Prophet Daniel Centuries before Christ was born of the Virgin Mary. Daniel tells of the son of man coming with the clouds.

13. I saw in the night visions, and behold, one like the sonne of man, came with the clouds of heauen, and came to the Ancient of daies, and they brought him neere before him.

14. And there was giuen him dominion and glory, and a kingdome, that all people, nations, and languages should serue him: his dominion is an euerlasting dominion, which shall not passe away; and his kingdome that, which shall not be destroyed.

The event is also foretold in Thessloains Chapter 4:

16. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

17. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

The second coming of Christ will not be obscure: In verse 7 of Revelation Chapter 1, … and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him.

For the Saints that have accepted Jesus as their personal savior this will be a glorious day. We will be given a glorified body that is perfect without blemish, No more diseases, no death and we be with the Lord our savior for evermore. For those who have rejected Christ it will be a day of tears and sorrow. All will know that he is the Holy son of God the father and that we as sinful man put him to death on the cross.

As notes of interest: Take note of the dual meaning of words in Revelation for example the words Clouds does not necessarily mean white puffy thing in the sky but clouds of witnessing meaning many too great to count. The word sea is used in a dual manner. Sea as in a body of water and a Sea of people.

I started taking and interest in the Book of Revelation as a young man and there were many things that I was puzzled about and did not understand such as ever eye shall see him when he comes back. I was wondering how this could be possible; people in Europe, People in the Mideast, and people in the Africa would see his coming all at the same time. Now it is no longer a mystery with modern day technology we can see any event taking place anywhere on earth instantly.

Revelation 1: 8-11

8. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

9. I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.

10. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,

11. Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

In verse 8: Christ identifies himself. He the beginning and the end. He is, He was, and he is to come. The Almighty. Ruler of the universe.

Verse 9: John identifies himself as the writer of this book. He tells his brothers that he in in the penal colony of Rome, the island of Patmos. His crime is for the word of the Lord and the testimony of Jesus Christ. He is ninety five years old and he is in tribulation. He is forced to work carrying buckets of rocks.

In verse 10-11: John says he was in spirit: Brother Gary Hamrick of the Corner Stone Chapel says in todays vernacular he was as if he was having an out of body experience. He heard a loud voice and he described it as the sound of a trumpet telling him to write down in a book the things “ What thou seest, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

MODULE 2,

BOOK OF REVELATIONS

LESSON 3

12. And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;

13. And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

14. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;

15. And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.

16. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

17. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

18. am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

19. Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

20. The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawvest are the seven churches.

In verse 12, John heard the voice of Jesus.In verse 15, John said his voice was like the sound of many waters.” This means that Jesus’ voice had the power and majesty of a mighty waterfall.” (ttps://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/revelation-1/)

When john turned to find the voice that spoke to him he saw seven candlesticks and the Son of Man was admist the candlesticks. The Son of Man is a Messianic Title of our Lord Jesus. Daniel prophesied about the

Son of Man would be coming with the clouds of Heaven.

Daniel 7:13. “I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.”

This is the first time that John has seen or heard Jesus since he ascended into heaven. In this vision, he is seeing Jesus

in his full glory and power. John was so overtaken by the power and majesty of Christ that “ John fell at his feet as if he was dead. The Lord told him fear not I am the first and the last verifying and testifying that he is God.

Before getting into the description of Christ in his glorified body, let us examine the seven Golden Lamp Stands.

In verse 20. Jesus identifies what the seven lampstands represent” The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

As the Menorahs provided the light for the Tabernacle “The churches receive their light from Christ and the gospel, and hold it forth to others. They are golden candlesticks; they should be precious and pure; not only the ministers, but the members of the churches; their light should so shine before men, as to engage others to give glory to God. And the apostle saw as though of the Lord Jesus Christ appeared in the midst of the golden candlesticks. He is with his churches always, to the end of the world, filling them with light, and life, and love.`” (Commentary on Revelation by Matthew Henry, 1710. https://www.kingjamesbibleonline.org/Revelation-Chapter-1/)

The seven stars represent the seven Angels of the churches. A majority of the commentaries hold that the Seven Angels are not spiritual beings but are the pastors of the seven churches. The original text used the Greek word Angelos meaning messenger.

Revelation Chapter 1: 13-19 gives a description of Jesus in his glorified Body: He is not coming back as the gentle Jesus that so many artist portrays but as the Son of God in all his power and glory. There will be fear and trembling and wails of sorrow by the unbelievers.

14. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;

15. And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.

16. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

17. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

18. I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

19. Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

Brother Gary Hamrick summarized the description of Jesus as Follows: Verse 13-Jesus Majesty. Verse 14 –Jesus Purity 15- Authority 16-His Glory. (Corner Stone Chapel mid-week Bible study-Chapter 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zxznt2gBhz8)

13. “Clothed with a garment down to the feet and girded about the chest with a golden band: The clothing of Jesus indicates that He is a person of great dignity and authority. Long garments were only worn by those who didn’t have to work much, so they were a picture of great status and authority. The golden band around the chest probably hints at the garments of the high priest (Exodus 29:5).”( https://enduringword.com/bible-commentary/revelation-1/)

14.” In this verse John describes Jesus as having hair like white wool and snow. The prophet Daniel wrote that he saw the Ancient of Days, describing Him as having hair that resembled wool (Daniel 7:9). Seen as having such a resemblance to God the Father, Jesus is eternal. His white hair suggests He is wise, experienced, dignified, authoritative, pure, and glorious”.( https://www.bibleref.com/Revelation/1/Revelation-1-14.html)

“Eyes like the flame of fire” is inductive of judgment” He is coming in judgment of a sinful world. No sin is hidden. He sees all and will judge man accordingly.

Out of his mouth is a two edged sword. This is not a literal sword but the word of God. His words are sharper than any two edge sword. He is the personation of the God. . Jesus is the word. John 1;14 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” ESV (https://www.openbible.info/topics/jesus_says_i_am_the_word)

John is overcome. He has seen Jesus in his full Glory. He fell at his feet as if he was dead. Author Note: As sinful as I am if I saw the Lord in all is glory I would probably fall at his feet not as if I was dead but dead in reality. His tremendous love for me and his awesomeness would be more than my heart could stand.

In verse 19 is the outline of Book of Revelation: Write the thing that you have seen Chapter 1. Things that are verses two and three, things that will be Chapter 4 to 21:

God has not left us ignorant with the Book of Revelations he has prepared us for his second coming and the horrible fate that waits for those whom has rejected him as their savior.

Now the time to accept Jesus as their Lord and savior. The fate of unbelievers is eternal punishment.

Revelation 2:18 “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” ESV.
